Dave, Harry, and Barney Leest were brothers and I worked with all of them at one time or another. In 1931 or 32, Dave Leest and I are coming from the Ventura side of Santa Susana Pass.  Called “Devil’s Slide,” the grade was so steep travelers blindfolded their horses.... the truck gets away from us. The rope running from the cab to an iron bar that controls the trailer brakes is broken. Dave said, “Do something Chuck, this thing is running away.” So I crawl out of the cab, take a hold of the cargo rope and crawl up on top of the beet pulp. Next I crawl down between the truck and trailer, sit on the tongue, and put my feet up against the trailer. I take the brake bar and pull so hard sparks are flying around in my head. After a while Dave walks up and says, “Hey Chuck, let us go.” I was pulling so hard the brakes locked up stalling the truck on the hill.
