I hauled out of San Quentin for a couple years. Most people have heard about San Quentin and all have tried to stay out of San Quentin. Back about 1935 I was happy to get into San Quentin…. I always enjoyed my trips to San Quentin. The first several trips I stopped at the gate and a guard would drive my truck in the main gate and return it loaded. Before too long they gave me clearance at the gate and allowed me to drive around back where the convicts loaded merchandise made by their fellow residents. Some retained a sense of humor as they loaded the gunny sacks on the truck. More than once I was told, “Now listen driver, if you ever lose a load out by the side of the road, you just give us a jingle and we will come out and load you back up.” That always brought a laugh; they were trying to be jolly.
